Petunias

I grow petunias every single summer for the hummingbirds and for their light scent. They come in pink, purple, red, white, and yellow colors and can have variegated flowers which are two-toned. They like to sprawl out as they grow and will bloom for the whole growing season and into the fall. Plant them in full sun in well-drained soil after the last frost. The larger variety is best for pots and hanging baskets and the smaller variety thrives growing in the ground.

Impatiens

I like to use Impatiens in my wheelbarrow planter every season. It’s not the deepest planter, but this little annual does quite well there. This is the perfect plant for the shadowy corners of your yard because it loves shade to part sun. It blooms in orange, pink, purple, red, white, and yellow from midsummer to fall. Impatiens can grow anywhere from 6 – 30 inches tall. For lower plants, place 8 – 12 inches apart when planting in moist soil. The closer these plants are then the taller they will grow. Be sure to keep them moist by watering regularly.
